DIY Dream Backyard Oasis on a Budget

DIY & How ToDIY Dream Backyard Oasis on a Budget

Looking to transform your “blah” backyard into a true outdoor oasis? If so, and if you’re on a tight budget, then you may be wondering where to begin. The good news is that you don’t have to have a huge budget to achieve your dream backyard. By following just a few tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating an outdoor space that you and your loved ones can enjoy all summer long (and beyond!).

1. Start With the Right Lighting

You might be surprised at what a difference the right lighting can make in your backyard. Not only does it “set the mood” for an enjoyable evening, but it can also serve a functional purpose. With this in mind, it’s important to have the right sources of both mood and task lighting in your outdoor entertainment space.

Some excellent (and inexpensive) sources of mood lighting include rope and string lights, which can be easily wrapped around pergolas and/or deck railings to create an inviting ambiance. Meanwhile, task lighting can provide you with functional light where you need it most. Consider, for example, installing cheap solar lights along pathways so that you’ll always be able to see your way in the dark. Bright task lighting should also be placed around outdoor food prep stations, such as near a grill or bar cart.

2. Create a Gathering Space or Focal Point

There are plenty of inexpensive ways to create a gathering space in your backyard if you don’t have one already. One of the most popular ideas is installing a fire pit, which naturally invites people to gather around and socialize on a chilly night. Fire pits can be as simple or extravagant as you’d like, so you can easily find an option that suits your tastes and budget. From inexpensive metal fire pit rings to more elaborate brick fire pits, there’s sure to be a solution that works for you.

And while adding a pool or hot tub/spa may not be within your budget, water features can create attractive gathering places. Even a small garden fountain can set the stage for a tranquil and relaxing place for you and your loved ones to hang out.

3. Maximize Impact With Seating

Last but certainly not least, the right seating can make all the difference when it comes to making the most out of your backyard space. Depending on how much room you have to work with, there are a few seating arrangements to consider for your deck or patio.

If you like to dine al fresco, you’ll want to make sure that you have an outdoor dining set that will accommodate everybody in your household and then some. If your yard sees a lot of sun, consider an outdoor dining set that comes with an umbrella for added shade when you need it.

Outdoor lounging areas are also great for encouraging casual gatherings. Consider, for example, designating a hangout space with an outdoor sectional, coffee table, and a beautiful outdoor area rug to tie it all together. Then, cozy the space up even more with some inexpensive greenery.

If you really want to up the entertainment value in your backyard (and if space allows), a dedicated bar area with its own portable bar cart can be a great option.

You don’t have to deplete your wallet to achieve the backyard oasis of your dreams. The right lighting, gathering spaces, and seating can make all the difference. And, of course, a little creativity and ingenuity can go a long way. Now, how will you get started in transforming your outdoor space?
